Tax Returns are Due 31 October
Income tax returns are due by 31 October unless you have arranged an extension via a licensed tax agent. The ATO’s eTax program is a good option if you wish to DIY, but if you prefer an agent this year I can recommend one. For details visit the ATO website www.ato.gov.au

Volunteers Needed for Free Financial Literacy Pilot
We are presenting and testing a financial literacy "MoneyWise Program" in October. You are invited to participate and/or nominate one or two helpful 20 to 40 yo employees who wish to improve their financial literacy and investment decision making then please contact us on 3851 1119 or via email to peter@hillis.net.au     Know Better = Do Better.

Assets Test Relaxed for Pensioners
More generous, pension assets test changes came into effect on 20 September 2007. If you needed to act before that date, we contacted you earlier. More pensioners are now able to access government part-pensions. For more details visit the Centrelink website www.centrelink.gov.au

Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Changes Afoot
Recent AML laws will come into effect shortly and you may find that you have to provide more identification details when investing or dealing with your adviser. For more details visit the Attorney-General website at www.ag.gov.au

Estate Planning - Stranger than Fiction
People often make provisions in their Will for ongoing care of their pets. This sounds simple enough, but care needs to be taken with some animals. Parrots for example can have a life expectancy of up to 70 years and might even outlive grandchildren! Is your Will up to date?

STOP PRESS: Commission Refund Service Cost Reduction Passed On
Our systems for refunding investment trailing commissions are at the point were we can actually reduce our fees to just $55 per fund for set up, plus $110 pa ongoing. If you have $40,000 in a managed investment fund or retail super fund this service could be worthwhile! See www.hillis.net.au/services.html for details.

Feedback and Referals
The very best way to find a financial planner is via word-of-mouth. If you have friends or family who could benefit from professional independent financial advice, or who invest in managed funds and would like their trailing commissions refunded, then please give them our contact details, or forward this email to them directly. Your help in this regard is much appreciated.
